Details of Incident / Close Call: 

A manual tree faller was attempting to long butt a 25” diameter hemlock. The faller anticipated the long butt would roll away from him, but when the cut dropped it rolled toward the faller, pinning his left leg. The faller narrowly avoided sustaining a broken leg.

Learnings and Suggestions: 
Before starting any bucking cuts you must assure that you:
 
Complete a bucking assessment which includes:
  • Determining high side
  • Assess pivot points
  • Identify binds
  • Plan the sequence of cuts
Follow Safe Bucking Procedures:
  • Brush out work area to allow freedom of movement
  • Ensure adequate escape route(s)
  • Ensure your footing is stable
  • After each cut reassess
If the Faller's safety is compromised:
  • Buck at alternate length if possible or leave it and mark it with an X
