Details of Incident / Close Call:

It is with deep regret that the BC Forest Safety Council notifies the forestry community of our seventh fatality in 2012. On Thursday, July 19th, a logging truck driver was fatally injured when the logging tractor-trailer crashed into a large tree at Harrison East Road about 15 km east of Harrison Lake.

No other persons or vehicles were involved in the incident. Although the exact cause of the incident is unknown, it serves as a reminder that driving on resource roads can be very hazardous. Review the following information with your crews, especially the drivers, to increase their focus on driving safely.

Learnings and Suggestions:
  • Keep your vehicle well maintained. Check that the critical safety systems like brakes, tires and load restraints are in good condition.
  • Do thorough pre-trip inspections to identify mechanical problems before you get on the road.
  • The types of hazards found on resource roads change rapidly. Steep grades, wildlife and changes to the road surface are just a few to watch out for.
  • Staying in your vehicle with your seatbelt buckled is your best bet to avoid injury during a crash.
  • Working long hours in hot weather can often lead to feeling sleepy behind the wheel. Take a break to stay alert.
