WorkSafeBC and the Coroner’s Service are investigating this incident and the results will be released as soon as possible.
Although the details of this incident are still unknown, take the time to review the following safety information:
- Review and reinforce, with trades and production employees, the importance of pre-job hazard and risk assessments and where required, lock out, prior to commencing work.
- Lock out machinery before starting maintenance. Remember to:
- Identify the machine(s) that needs to be locked out. If unsure ask your supervisor.
- Turn off the machine and wait until all moving parts have stopped.
- Remove, control or switch off all energy sources (e.g., gravity, kinetic, hydraulic, spring including mobile equipment & material that can be introduced into the work area from another process)
- Apply lock(s).
- Test the machine by turning it on and then off to ensure that it cannot start up.
- Before performing maintenance work, talk with the other workers in the area including mobile equipment operators. Communicate what you are doing so they are familiar with your work plan and can assist if necessary.
- Practice using your emergency response plans. Conducting realistic drills is the best way to prepare for an actual emergency.
