Fatality Alert
On February 16th, a log truck driver was fatally injured north of Fort St John when his loaded log truck failed to negotiate a curve and rolled over. Road and weather conditions were poor at the time of the incident.
Our condolences go out to the family, friends and co-workers of the deceased and our sympathies to everyone else who has been affected by this incident.
The Coroners Service and RCMP are investigating.
This is the 3rd harvesting fatality of 2017. Although the details of this incident are still unknown, review the following safety information:
- Watch weather forecasts and assess road conditions before starting work. If roads are too icy or hazardous, suspend or delay work until conditions improve.
- When road conditions are poor: slow down, drive to the conditions and use tire chains.
- During a rollover, seatbelts will keep drivers in the cab where there is greater protection. Seatbelts also keep drivers in position to make appropriate steering inputs, especially when emergency steering is required. Wearing seatbelts is also required by law.
- Become very familiar with the roads that are used for work. Identify the curves, hills and sections of road that may be hazardous during poor weather conditions.
- Report hazardous conditions to your supervisor so others can be alerted and action can be taken to control the hazards.
