2018-01-10 - Driver of Public Vehicle

Fatality Alert

On January 10th, a southbound logging truck driving in the fast lane overtook another semi-truck that was driving in the slow lane. The vehicles made contact which resulted in the logging truck’s trailer moving into the northbound lane and colliding with a public vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was fatally injured and a passenger received minor injuries. The truck drivers were not injured in this incident.

Our thoughts are with the injured passenger and we extend condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. Our sympathies to all those affected by this incident.

The RCMP and Coroners Service are investigating.

While this event is still under investigation and incident details still to be determined, please review the following safety information related to safe winter driving and log hauling operations:

  1. Winter conditions often create poor road conditions and limited visibility. Stopping distances and vehicle control are negatively affected by snow and ice on the road. Slow down when conditions are poor; choose an appropriate speed for the situation.

  2. The use of winter tires and chains can help maintain vehicle control on winter roads.

  3. Maintain a cautious attitude when driving. Think about potential surprise events on the road and how you would react to keep safe.

  4. During a busy hauling season, watch out for rushing, fatigue, and complacent behaviours which can contribute to incidents.
