Fatality Alert
On March 1st, a pickup truck lost control and rolled on Highway 19 near Black Creek on Vancouver Island. The driver, a forestry worker and the lone occupant, was fatally injured in the incident.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and our sympathies to all those affected by this incident.
The RCMP and Coroners Service are investigating.
While this event is still under investigation and incident details are still to be determined, please review the following information related to safe driving:
- Winter and spring weather are unpredictable and can create icy road conditions. Black ice on paved roads is difficult to see and often forms when temperatures hover around 0 degrees Celsius. Slow down if the conditions are poor; choose an appropriate speed for the situation.
- Secure all loads before travelling and ensure tie downs are suitable for the weight and equipment being transported.
- Watch out for wildlife along the roads, especially at dawn and dusk when poor visibility makes wildlife difficult to see. Slow down to create a safety buffer so you can react appropriately to surprises on the road.
- Daily commutes can become routine but keep in mind the highest risk activity often is driving to and from work. Make driving a priority in your safety programs.
- Seatbelts are critical safety equipment. Wearing them will keep the driver and passengers properly restrained and in the cab where they have the best chance of survival.
