Fatality Alert

A faller was fatally injured when he was struck by a tree that was felled by another faller at a logging operation near the Kitimat area on April 18, 2019.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and our sympathies to all those affected by this incident.

This is the second harvesting fatality of 2019.

While this incident is still under investigation and details are still to be determined, please review the following safety information:

  1. Regulation requires that all workers are clear of the area that is within two tree lengths of any tree that is to be felled. An exception to this are falling supervisors who are allowed at the base of the tree that is to be felled when supervising or directing the falling activity, training a faller or helping a faller overcome a falling difficulty.

  2. Before entering an active falling area, the faller must be contacted by radio first and they must give the OK before anyone is allowed into that area.

  3. When falling trees, do a thorough inspection of the tree and determine how to place the falling cuts to maintain control of the tree. If the tree cannot be felled in a controlled way, contact your qualified assistance and reassess the situation.
