Fatality Alert

On April 15th, a worker at a sawmill plant in Surrey was fatally injured and another was seriously injured. The workers were passengers in a vehicle that was struck by a freight train at a crossing.

Our condolences go out to the family, friends and co-workers of the deceased and our sympathies to all those affected by this incident.

The Coroners Service and RCMP are investigating.

Although the details of this incident are still unknown, review the following safety information:

  1. Do not attempt to cross railway tracks when the crossing barriers are down or there is adjacent rail line activity.

  2. Many operations have active rail lines adjacent to their operations. Review the safe work procedures associated with rail lines and crossing points with all employees.

  3. Complacency can set in when workers are exposed to or perform hazardous tasks regularly. Provide the workforce with periodic reviews of all workplace hazards and discuss the requirement to follow all company and regulatory rules.
